What Is an IPL Photofacial?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment targeting pigmentation issues in the skin, revealing radiant, younger-looking skin. An IPL photofacial can restore a vibrant complexion, reverse sun damage, and improve the overall appearance of the face, neck, and chest. Ready to learn more? What’s an IPL photofacial?
IPL photofacials use an FDA-approved device to emit light energy in multiple wavelengths. This isn’t laser treatment. Instead, it uses diffused, broad-spectrum light to target melanin and hemoglobin, which can take on a darker appearance than the rest of your skin in high concentrations. Here’s what you need to know:
What do IPL photofacials help with?
While IPL can be used for semi-permanent hair removal, it’s most effective for treating uneven skin color and tone. Clinical applications include:
Sun damage and age spots
Freckles
Hyperpigmentation
Rosacea and redness
Broken capillaries and vascular abnormalities
Mild acne and discoloration caused by acne scars
Dull skin
Who should get an IPL photofacial?
Clients with light to medium skin tones who want to reverse discoloration can capitalize on the anti-aging effects of IPL photofacials. However, these treatments aren’t for everyone. People with darker skin tones have an increased risk of developing more pronounced discoloration after IPL.
It’s also not suitable for pregnant women, people with active skin infections, and those taking photosensitizing medications like Accutane.
What are the side effects?
Mild redness and inflammation are common in the first few days after an IPL photofacial. Your skin may temporarily become dry, flaky, and more sensitive to sun exposure. In rare cases, blistering, hyperpigmentation, and infection may occur.

What are the benefits of an IPL photofacial?
There’s a lot to love about IPL photofacials! Here are some of the benefits you can expect from treatment:
Reduces sun damage and age spots
Chromophores like melanin and hemoglobin absorb light energy emitted by IPL devices. This light becomes thermal energy and breaks up excess pigment, which your body flushes out through various waste processes. In other words, IPL photofacials destroy and eliminate discoloration.
Improves skin tone and texture
An IPL machine can improve skin tone and texture, smoothing the skin’s surface to reduce blotchy, patchy discoloration. You may see rapid results for hyperpigmentation alongside rough, bumpy, uneven skin texture.
Reduces redness and rosacea
Clients with sensitive skin types and rosacea-prone skin can achieve a more uniform complexion with fewer episodes of facial flushing with a series of IPL photofacial treatments.
Treats broken capillaries and spider veins
Persistent skin inflammation can lead to vascular lesions in the face and neck. IPL can target visible blood vessels beneath the skin to reduce the appearance of spider veins, broken capillaries, and red streaks.
Stimulates collagen production
Age and sun exposure take a toll on collagen levels, leading to fine lines and skin laxity. IPL stimulates your body’s natural ability to generate collagen and elastin for a youthful glow and greater elasticity.

How to prepare for your first IPL photofacial
Your esthetician or healthcare provider will give you specific instructions to help you prepare for your IPL photofacial, including:
Minimize sun exposure
Since IPL devices use light energy to eliminate discoloration, photofacials can compound sun damage on recently tanned skin. Starting at least four weeks before your IPL session, add a broad-spectrum sunscreen containing zinc oxide to your daily skincare routine. Wear protective clothing anytime you head outside to prevent damage and additional discoloration.
Stop using certain products
About a week before your IPL photofacial, you’ll want to remove harsh active ingredients and potent actives from your skincare regimen. Retinols, AHAs, BHAs, and exfoliants may be too drying and increase photosensitivity.
Also keep in mind that certain medications, including Accutane and certain antibiotics, can make your skin more reactive to UV exposure. Be sure to let your esthetician know about any medications or topical products you’re using to ensure a safe and effective treatment.
Make sure skin is clean and product-free
On the day of your IPL photofacial, it’s important to arrive with clean skin free of any topical products. Wash your face and neck with a gentle cleanser and avoid any moisturizers, serums, sunscreens, and makeup.
Your skin should be completely dry and product-free. If you must arrive after a day at the office, ask your esthetician to cleanse your skin before treatment.
